Honeymooners are back in Hawaii

International wedding and honeymoon traffic, which had lagged earlier in the year, ran 120 percent higher than year-ago levels in August.

This news from the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism was welcome at a time when travel booking agencies in Japan report a trend toward smaller ceremonies closer to home.

There was also a surge in arrivals by international students in August. But actual vacation traffic from foreign locales ran below year 2001 levels.

Counting domestic as well as international arrivals, DBEDT says wedding and honeymoon traffic last month ran 9.7 percent better than last year. For the year to date, wedding and honeymoon visitor levels are now running almost 12 percent above year 2001 levels.
